Welcome to 5th Grade Math

Welcome to the Math homepage. Math is done a little differently on my website because of the nature of the subject. We will do some math projects in class, but I normally do not post information about projects and tests on this part of the website, unless I see that it is necessary.

We will primarily use this page as a resource for in the classroom. There are a ton of amazing math websites that are free to use, fun, and are a great way to help you learn. At the bottom of this box is an area labeled “Weekly Challenge.” I will update this as we use it in class. We may not have a weekly challenge every week, but we will use it.

Below the weekly challenge area, I have included some websites you can check out when you are on the computers at school. Who knows, you might find yourself using some of this when you are at home.

Math Project Information Sheet

For this math project, you will be collecting and organizing data. You will be analyzing the information you collect and putting the information in different types of graphs.

Part 1:

  1. First you will need to develop a question that collects categorical data from your classmates. The answer to your question cannot be a number. For example you might ask, “What month were you born in?” or “What is your favorite color?”
  2. After collecting the data, you will need to create a frequency chart to represent and organize your collected responses.
  3. With this data, you will be creating a bar graph and a circle graph using Create-A-Graph. Create-A-Graph is a online program that I will attach as a link to our class website.

Part 2:

  1. Now you will develop a question that collects numerical data from your classmates. The answer to this question will need to be a number. For example you might ask, “How old were you when you rode a bicycle for the first time?” or “How many times have you been to the library this month?”
  2. You will need to organize the numbers you collect from least to greatest.
  3. After organizing the data you will be placing the data in a stem and leaf chart on the part 2 project sheet.
  4. You will also need to determine the mean, median, mode, and range of your numerical data.
  5. For this data you will be creating a line graph.

Part 3:

  1. After all of part 1 and part 2 is completed, you will create a display to explain to the class. On the display you will need to include :
    1. Your categorical question
    2. Your frequency chart
    3. Your bar graph
    4. Your circle graph
    5. Your numerical question
    6. Your stem and leaf plot
    7. The mean, median, mode, and range
    8. Your line graph.

I will provide an example in class for what your final product should look like. It is very important that you stay on top of this project because it is worth 2 test grades. If you are unable to complete any work during class time, you will need to work on your project at home. All projects will be due on September 15th. If you are in doubt about any aspect of the project, do not hesitate to ask.
